Obituary

Mother Jaunita Powell Davis (fondly known as Mama Neat) was born on March 7, 1921, to the late Ezra and Blonzora Powell in Greensboro, NC. She transitioned to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 9, 2017 at Becon Place. Mother Davis attended Guilford County Schools, where she played basketball, and was a star player. She was married to the late Reverend James L. Davis for fifty-seven years.

Mother Davis joined Mt. Zion, UCOG, in the late 1930s and has been an active member for over seventy-three years. She served in the following capacities: Sunshine Band Assistant, President of Missionary #2,  Vacation Bible School Teacher,, Usher, Kitchen Assistant and choir member. She had been a member of the Ministry of Caring for twenty-one years, where she was involved in home visitations, nursing homes, and prison ministries. In addition, she was actively involved in the Wednesday Prayer.

While serving at Mt. Zion, Mother Davis also traveled with her husband who was a pastor. She was First lady at the following churches: Mt: Sini UCOG, Ahoskie, NC and Mt. Pisgah UCOG, Forest City, NC. In addition, she worked with her husband in Apex, NC. For many Mother Davis traveled with her husband to these churches on Sunday morning and would come back to sing in the choir at Mt. Zion on Sunday nights. Mother Davis was a loving, faithful, and loyal servant of God. "May the work she done, speak for her.

Mother Janita Davis leaves to celebrate her life, three daughters, Min. Doris Duke of Greensboro, NC. Mrs. Gretchel Curry of Graham, NC, and Rev. James Dr. Alice Nichols (Kenric) of Greensboro, NC; one son Rev. Rev. James Davis Jr, (Phyliss) of Greensboro, NC; one sister Lillian Powell, and one sister-in-law, Cathine Williams; a son-in-law, Nathaniel Russel, twenty-two grandchildren, forty-six great-grandchildren and twenty-nine great-great grandchildren.

Mother Davis was preceded in death by one brother, Ezra Powell Jr, two sisters, Doreatha McPhaul and Geneva Pinnix; two daughter, Virgil Russell and Blondzella Davis; one grandson, Jukian Nichols, and two son-in-law, Rev Ernest Dukes, and Bishop C. L. Curry.
