Obituary

Mrs. Thelma Mae Davis was born August 28, 1927. She died peacefully at Carolina Commons Rehabilitation Center on Sunday, January 9, 2011. Her formative years were spent in Farmville, N.C. She was reared by her father, Mr. Herbert Bynum. Upon Mr. Bynum’s Death in 1940, she moved at the age of thirteen to Norfolk, VA to live with relatives.

After graduation from Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, VA, she moved to Brooklyn, NY where she united with the Concord Baptist Church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Magdelene Chapter Number 50.

Mrs. Davis retired from the Brooklyn Children’s Museum in New York City, NY o August 25, 1989. She later relocated to Greensboro, NC where she united with Reid Memorial CME and , subsequently united with New Zion Missionary Baptist Church. She was a faithful member of the Missionary Circle, Wednesday Morning Bible Study and the Usher Board until she began to suffer with various health problems. Mrs. Davis was an ardent supporter of the New Zion Food Bank and the Boy and Girl Scout Troops.

Survivors include her cousins, Robert & Jeanie Joyner of Greensboro; Sudie Fields and Minnie McCullough of Durham, NC; Calvin Mooring of New York, NY; William (Bill) Mooring of Greensboro, NC; sister-in-law, Ellen Fike Dafau of New York, NY; and adopted sister, Mattie Lyons of Farmville, NC; and one of her long time best friends, Sallie Crooks, of Brooklyn, NY.

A very special “Thank You” to Mr. David and Mrs. Barbara Mims, Mr. Leroy Wilks, Robert & Jeanie Joyner, the staff of Wesley Long Hospital, the staff of the Cancer Center, the staff of Carolina Commons, and last but not least, entire the New Zion Missionary Baptist Church Family, whom she loved with all of her ‘heart of gold’.

Funeral services will be held at New Zion Missionary Baptist Church Sunday, January 16, 2011 at 1:30 p.m. There will be a viewing at 1 p.m.
